Dipa Karmakar, India’s first female gymnast to qualify for the quadrennial mega event after 52 years from India. Karmakar was pleasantly surprised when she was informed of a gold pin she was to receive from the international parent body for being a ‘World Class Gymnast’ after her showing at the World Championships in Oct-Nov 2015. Karmakar is one of the five women that have successfully landed the very difficult Produnova vault in competition, also holding the highest score amongst all (15.100 ) in her attempt, She hails from Tripura with its rich tradition in the sport and rudimentary infrastructure. Produnova, is one of the tougher vaults being competed in the world – a combination of generating sufficient height to complete rotation and the difficulty in finding the ground after twisting in order to control the landing.

23-year old gymnast earned a medal at the 2014 edition was just the start of redemption — the Olympics dangled on her horizon. Dipa took the 15th spot out of 34 available at the test event, meaning she was in the top half of the competitors.

Dipa became the first Indian female gymnast to secure a medal, whe she won a bronze at the 2104 Commonwealth Games, held at Glasgow, followed up with another bronze at the Asian Championships in Hiroshima.

Dipa Karmakar booked a berth for the Rio Games after putting up a strong performance at the final qualifying and test event.
