Namchi, a fast developing place in South Sikkim is often known as the Culture Capital of the state. The place has been developed as a hub of religious and cultural tourism in Sikkim. In fact you can see replica of all the four dhams of India (char dhams) at Namchi and also the biggest statue of Guru Padmasambhava. Namchi also has a well laid out township with a Central Park (a small square) at the town center.

Namchi is a town located at an altitude of 1675 mt above sea level. The area rose to popularity recently with the erection of the world’s tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Sikkim. Namchi is known for its Buddhist monasteries, high mountain peaks and unmatched view points. The town is at a distance of 90km from Siliguri. It is also close to West Bengal and other major cities in Sikkim.

The Namchi Helipad area is a wonderful open space with a large round about. The road from here goes towards Namchi town which is about 5kms away. Helicopter service is available between Bagdogra and Namchi on every Thursday. Keeping the helipad on your left, look up on your right and you can see the large statue of Lord Shiva on a hilltop (looks tiny from here) – that is the famous Char Dham.

Namchi literally means “Sky High” in the Bhutia language. Apart from being a visual treat to travellers, Namchi also is growing as a tourist destination due to its rich history and a variety of tourist attractions and activities. Though it has a lot of resemblance to the state capital, Gangtok, Namchi is far quiet and silent when compared to the buzzing environ of Gangtok.Namchi is also known for its interesting history and mysterious stories from the past.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra airport which is 124 km from Gangtok and 190 km from Mangan. Gangtok and Bagdogra are connected through helicopter services. From Gangtok to Namchi jeep and buses services are available.

The nearest rail is New Jalpaiguri. It is well connected to most of the major cities in India.

Roads are good and the vast network of road in Sikkim is well connected with the rest of the destinations of the region. Gangtok is located at a distance of 124 km, Kalimpong is located at a distance of 49 km, and Darjeeling is located at a distance of 45 km from Namchi. Private buses, jeeps and taxis are also available from Siliguri and Bagdogra. Bookings can be made at the SNT terminus, Siliguri. Namchi is accessible from Gangtok, Yukosom and Pelling through NH 31A.
